EMCI BODY OF KNOWLEDGE (EMCI-BOK®) GUIDE TO LAUNCH IN AUGUST 2009
(August 4, 2009)

EMCI PARTNER SOCIETY ASEM HOLDING 30TH CONFERENCE IN OCTOBER 2009
(August 4, 2009)

The American Society of Engineering Management (ASEM) was founded in the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering (EMSE) at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly known as the University of Missouri-Rolla) in 1979.  Since that time it has grown to become a robust national organization.  The EMSE department will be the host of the 30th anniversary conference in 2009 in recognition of its founder’s status.  The conference will be held at the University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Springfield, Missouri, October 14-17, 2009. The theme of the conference will be Engineering Management: Celebrating the Past, Engineering the Future.  There will be pre-conference short courses for which CEUs will be issued, technical paper sessions, and a number of social activities.  EMCI’s manager, Greg Marino, will deliver a presentation with Dr. Benjamin “Duke” Dow, the department’s Director of Middle East programs, on the steadily growing partnership between ASEM and EMCI. The conference is typically attended by practicing engineering managers, faculty from major universities, and by students from those same schools. It is a beautiful time of year in the Ozarks, so we hope you will make plans to attend and help us celebrate this anniversary of ASEM. You will find more information on our department website at http://campus.mst.edu/asem2009 or on the ASEM website at www.asem.org.

ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT IN ACTION: AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. JERRY WESTBROOK

Dr. Jerry Westbrook is one of the pioneers of the engineering management discipline.  His many accomplishments include directing one of the strongest departments in the country at the University of Alabama, Huntsville, and creating a professional engineering management certificate program for ASEM, which he has led at Alstom and Battelle (Oak Ridge National Lab).  Dr. Westbrook also serves on EMCI’s Body of Knowledge Committee and was instrumental in both restructuring and refocusing Domain 7, now called Leadership and Organizational Management.  He will be delivering tutorials at GEMC 2010, information for which follows this interview.  In anticipation of both the release of the Second Edition of the EMCI-BOK and the GEMC 2010 conference, Greg Marino sought his insights on engineering management and its importance for today’s engineering and technical professionals.

EMCI REPOSITIONS EMCF EXAM FOR EARLY CAREER ENGINEERS
(January 9, 2009)

Following the recommendation and concurrence of the EMCI Examination Committee and the Board of the American Society of Engineering Management (ASEM) in May and November 2008, respectively, EMCI has repositioned the Engineering Management Certification Fundamentals (EMCF) examination to allow a broader spectrum of early career engineers to apply for eligibility and become EMCI-certified.

• Graduates of Bachelor of Engineering Management (BSEM) degree programs may now apply to sit for the EMCF upon graduation.

• Graduates of Bachelor’s degree programs in all other engineering, science, and technology disciplines with one (1) year of practical experience at the time of examination may now apply to sit for the EMCF.

These changes were made after a careful evaluation of the EMCF Pilot administered by EMCI in cooperation with ASEM among ABET-accredited Bachelor’s in Engineering Management departments at the United States Military Academy, University of Arizona, and the Missouri University of Science and Technology, whose data indicated strong correlation between academic training and material covered in the EMC-BOK.  In addition to providing a readily-available and –applicable professional credential for early-career entrants with academic training in engineering management, the EMCI Exam Committee and ASEM both recognized that the increased prevalence of management coursework in undergraduate engineering, science, and technology curricula.  When combined with a minimum of one year’s experience, this allows for EMCI to reach out to young engineers interested in a management credential that complements their technical careers.
