EMCI CERTIFICATION BY EXAMINATION
EMCI programs are based on uniform, globally administered examinations that evaluate an engineer’s knowledge and skills in planning, organizing and directing technological activities and resource allocation. These examinations are three hours in length and composed of 150 questions derived from major engineering management subject areas comprising the Engineering Management Certification-Body of Knowledge, or EMC-BOK™ (see below). There are currently two EMCI examinations administered worldwide in English and Chinese:
- Engineering Management Certification Fundamentals (EMCF™)
The EMCF examination emphasizes fundamental aspects and principles of engineering management and is designed for early career engineers and other technical professionals. If you are an early career engineer, scientist, or other technologist intent on entering engineering management on your career path, then the EMCF credential is right for you.
Graduates of Bachelor's/Master's degree programs in Engineering Management are eligible to apply for the EMCF upon graduation.
Graduates of Bachelor's degree/global equivalent in all other engineering, science, and technology disciplines are eligible to apply for the EMCF with one (1) year of practical experience at the time of examination.
Those without a bachelor's degree/global equivalent in an engineering, science, or technology discipline may be eligible upon demonstration of two (2) years of engineering education and five (5) years of practice.
- Engineering Management Certification Professional (EMCP™)
The EMCP examination draws from empirical knowledge and skill sets of more experienced engineering managers who want to enhance their engineering management experience through professional development. If you are an experienced engineering professional with management experience, then you are well suited for the EMCP credential.
To qualify, you must hold a bachelor's degree or global equivalent in engineering, science, or technology. EMCI certification requires at least five consecutive years of engineering practice (i.e., three years of engineering practice and two years of engineering management experience) and passage of the EMCP exam. While the education requirement above can be waived if you have already obtained EMCF Certification, EMCF-holding candidates for the EMCP must still demonstrate four (4) years of experience (i.e., minimum 1 year of practical experience and minimum 2 years in a managerial role) at the time of the EMCP examination to be eligible.
Each program tests engineers’ knowledge and skills based on 8 subject domains found in the EMC-BOK™.
EMCI examinations are delivered through a computer-based format online at Prometric test centers worldwide. In certain countries and regions, a paper-based format is offered until online testing becomes available. Paper-based administrations may also be arranged for high-volume institutional participants.
Passing Score
The passing score for both the EMCF and the EMCP examinations represents 70% correct answers overall, wherein no less than 50% of questions covering any one domain are answered correctly.
