What is the EMC-BOK™?

The Engineering Management Certification Body of Knowledge (EMC-BOK™)

Prior to the program’s launch in 2005, panels of practicing engineering managers from industry, government and academia developed the Engineering Management Certification Body of Knowledge (EMC-BOK™) based on a thorough survey and assessment of best practices in management in engineering-, science-, and technology-focused environments. The knowledge areas and skills comprising the EMC-BOK™ have also been reviewed and prioritized by the rank-and-file engineering managers of all disciplines in terms of importance and frequency of use in practice, consisting of eight general domains, with 49 knowledge areas and 170 sub-knowledge areas.  EMCI’s Body of Knowledge Committee, composed of subject matter experts and representing the five EMCI founding partner societies, is presently refining the EMC-BOK™ to facilitate both updated EMCI course development among EMCI Authorized Knowledge Providers (AKPs) and the Second Edition of A Guide to the Engineering Management Certification Body of Knowledge (EMC-BOK™).

EMC-BOK consists of eight general domains, with 49 knowledge areas and 170 sub-knowledge areas.  The domains and knowledge areas are shown in the following table.
